The Problem
Though Canada is one of the safest countries in the world, youth safety still poses a huge issue, as children and youth under 18 years old are at a much higher risk of experiencing physical and sexual assault compared to adults. According to the Government of Canada, the rate of youth being victims of violent crime are 1.5 times higher than those of individuals aged 18-24.
The impact of youth violence extends far beyond the immediate physical harm (such as premature death, injuries, disabilities, etc), and are likely to result in lifelong emotional and psychological consequences. Even if youth do not directly experience violence, Statistics Canada shows that even a perceived sense of danger can negatively impact an individual’s physical and mental health.
Feeling safe is a fundamental human need that directly influences the way we function in our day-to-day lives. By raising awareness on youth safety and available resources, Securikey aims to empower Canadian youth to feel confident and capable, no matter what kind of environment they live in.
